There are a lot of men’s watches out that that have a luminous dial or hand and hour markers that light up. However, how do you know which ones are actually of good quality? And which ones give you the most bang for your buck?
Lucky for you I’ve compiled a list with the 12 best men’s watches with a luminous dial. There’s something for everybody on this list. From tough sports watches to stylish dress watches. Let’s see which ones made the list!
1. Seiko 5 Automatic (SNK809)
Price: $90 – $120
Materials: The 37mm case of this watch is made out of stainless steel which is what you would expect at this price point. The strap of the watch is made out of canvas that is available in black (SNK809), blue (SNK807), green (SNK805) or beige (SNK807).
The cover of the dial of the watch is made out of Hardlex which is Seiko’s own invention. Normally these watches use mineral dials. However, Seiko uses Hardlex which is more scratch-resistant than mineral.
Why: If you’re talking about great watches against a great price then I have to include a Seiko in the list. The Seiko 5 series may be their most affordable line of watches that also has great quality.
For those that don’t know, the ”5” stands for the five different elements that make this series special. First of all this watch makes uses of an automatic movement that’s also self-winding. Therefore you won’t have to manually wind it which is very convenient.
Furthermore the 5 series makes use of Seiko’s Diashock system. In essence this means that the watch is fitted with a shock absorber that protects the automatic movement and makes sure it will stay accurate.
Another aspect of this watch is the fact that it has a day-date aperture at the 3’o clock mark and a recessed crown at the 4’o clock mark. Finally, it’s also water resistant up to 30 meters (100 feet).
It must be noted that this watch doesn’t necessarily has a dial that lights up. However, the hands of the watch and the hour markers are luminous which provides excellent visibility at night time.
2. Citizen Eco-Drive Nighthawk (BJ7000-52E)
Price: $180 – $220
Materials: The 42mm case of the Nighthawk is made out of high-quality stainless steel and the same goes for the bracelet. Personally, I really like the style of the watch because of this. The dial of the watch is made of mineral which is a good material but isn’t totally scratch-resistant.
Why: Citizen is another example of a manufacturer that makes quality watches and has been doing so for a long time. The Eco-Drive Nighthawk has to be included on this list for several reasons.
First of all, the name ”Nighthawk” should give you a good idea about how visible this watch is at night time. The hands and hour markers on this watch are pretty big (which fits the design of the watch). Since they are luminous that also means they are clearly visible when it’s dark outside.
Secondly, the Eco-Drive series of Citizen is something special in general. The name Eco-Drive refers to the technology that is used to power this watch. The watch uses any form of light (whether this be artificial or natural) and transforms it into electrical energy. This energy is then stored in a power cell which is infinitely rechargeable. This means the battery doesn’t need to be charged in any way.
Other features of this watch include a low-charge warning. Also, it’s water resistant up to 200 meters (660 feet). This makes the watch suitable for serious water sports or marine activity. However, scuba diving is not an option.
Finally, it must be noted that this watch uses a Japanese quartz movement. These movements are known for their affordability and their incredible high accuracy (+/- 10 seconds per year).
3. Casio G-Shock Mudmaster (GG-1000-1ACR)
Price: $280 – $320
Materials: The 48mm case of this watch is made out of resin which is very shock absorbent and fits this watch perfectly. The same material is used to make the military green strap.
These bands are interchangeable so you can select another color if you prefer. Finally, the dial of the watch is protected by mineral glass which is the material most watches at this price point use. It can take some form of abuse but isn’t as scratch resistant as sapphire.
Why: If you’re looking for the best men’s watch with a luminous dial than I have to include a G-Shock Mudmaster. The reason for that is the fact that the design of this watch has been a crowd favorite for many years now. If you’re looking for a tough watch that can take a beating then this is a great pick.
Furthermore, this watch has several features that many will enjoy. These include a compass, world time, timer and a stop watch. Also, the hands of the watch are luminous. This means you don’t even have to light up the dial (which is also an option) to see the correct time.
One thing to keep in mind with G-Shock Mudmaster watches is the fact that they are very large. Therefore they fit well with men that have large wrist or those of use who enjoy big watches. This watch is definitely not subtle!
4. Victorinox Fieldforce (241849)
Price: $230 – $270
Materials: This watch is also completely made out of polished stainless steel which looks very stylish. The dial of the watch is matte black while the hour markers and hands are completely white. Furthermore, the cover of the dial is made out of anti-reflective sapphire. This is a very strong material and it’s about as good as it gets in terms of dial protection. Finally, the bezel is made out of aluminium.
Why: Victorinox is one of the two companies that is in charge of producing Swiss knives for the Swiss army which shows they care about craftmanship. The same effort that goes into their knives goes into their watches.
The watch is Swiss made and combines affordability and quality. The luminous hour markers and hands provide great readability at night time. Victorinox uses Super-Luminova technology for this which means these elements are very bright. Furthermore, the watch uses an in-house quartz movement which is very accurate and keeps time wihtin a few seconds a year.
5. Oris BC 3 Advanced (0173576414263-0742205G)
Price: $800 – $900
Materials: This higher-end watch has a 42mm stainless steel case which is finished in gray. The case is attached to a sturdy, sillicone band. It must be noted that different models can have differents bands. Leather, for example, is also an option. Furthermore, the cover of the dial is made out of anti-reflective sapphire which is what you would expect with a watch that costs almost a $1.000.
Why: Oris is definitely one of the more high-end watch makers on this list. For a brand that many consider to be on-par with TAG Heuer and Longines they produce excellent watches that are still quite affordable within their category.
Oris is a Swiss watch maker that has been producing the BC3 Advanced series since 1999. This series is inspired by the world of aviation so that’s where it’s clean design comes from. Just like the previous Victorinox the Oris BC3 Advanced also makes use of Super-Luminova technology for clearly visible hands and hour markers at night.
Furthermore, this watch is equipped with an automatic, Swiss made movement which means 60% of it’s manufacturing steps have taken place in Switzerland. This ensures that the movement of the watch is of great quality.
6. Luminox Navy Seal Colormark (3051 EVO)
Price: $280 – $320
Materials: This watch is completely made out of polyurethane which makes it a very resilient watch that should be able to take a beating. The 44mm case of the watch is actually reinforced with carbon fiber which makes it even stronger. The dial of the watch is made out of mineral which is hard but not hard enough to be scratch-resistant.
Why: This watch is known as the watch that is used by Navy Seals and US Air Force pilots. The reason for that is clear. It’s made out of very durable materials that will last you a long time. Furthermore it’s water resistant up to 200 meters (660 feet).
The movement of the watch is a quartz one which is very accurate and isn’t as fragile as an automatic watch would be. Finally, the hands and markers of the watch have a special form of paint on them. This paint supposedly makes them shine ”a 100 times brighter” than regular luminous hands and markers in low light conditions.
7. Seiko Prospex (SSC017)
Price: $300 – $350
Materials: The 44mm case of the watch is made out of stainless steel. The same can be said about the case and the blue-black bezel. Since this is a Seiko watch the dial isn’t covered by mineral but by Hardlex. This is a stronger material than regular mineral.
Why: Because it’s a Seiko that also looks really cool, that’s why this watch has to be on the list. Especially for the people that are looking for a dive watch that also has luminous hands and hour markers this should be a good decision.
The watch is powered by solar energy which is very convenient and also a proven technology these days. Furthermore it also has three chronograph sub-dials which fit the watch very well and also makes it more interesting. Finally, it’s water resistant up to 200 meters (660 feet).
8. Tissot Automatic (T0654301605100)
Price: $350 – $400
Materials: This watch has a stainless steel case with a fixed bezel out of the same material. The strap is made out of genuine black leather which fits the black dial very well. Furthermore, the cover of the dial is made out of scratch resistant sapphire crystal which is the best material you can get for this purpose.
Why: Most men’s watches that have a light up dial or luminous hands are considered sport or diving watches. That’s the reason why I wanted to include the Tissot Automatic on this list. It’s not a sports or diving watch, instead it’s a very stylish dress watch that still has luminous marker and hands.
Furthermore it has a day-date display at the 3’o clock mark and an automatic movement. Also, it has a 42 hour power reserve. Did I already mention that it’s Swiss made? Because it is. Overall this is just a very solid dress watch and it deserves a spot on this list.
9. Orient Ray II (FAA02005D9)
Price: $120 – $160
Materials: The Orient Ray II has a stainless steel bracelet and case. This watch is available in three different versions. These are:
- Polished stainless steel case and bracelet. Blue dial.
- Polished stainless steel case and bracelet. Black dial.
- Black stainless steel case, bracelet and dial.
Furthermore, this Japanese diving watch has a mineral dial cover which is expected at this price point.
Why: Orient is a Japanese company that has been selling great automatic watches for more then 70 years now. All there movements are made in-house in Japan. This really shows that Orient cares about the overall quality of their watches.
Furthermore, the visibility of this watch is excellent with large, visible hands and hour markers. Another neat feature of this watch is the fact that the movement has a hacking function. This means that you can stop the seconds hand while setting the right time. This way you can set the watch to the exact second.
10. Seiko Chronograph (SNN241)
Price: $100 – $140
Materials: the 42mm case is made out of stainless steel and has a brown dial that fits well with the brown leather strap. This strap also has white stitching which makes it stand out from the rest of the strap. Just like the other Seiko’s on this list the cover of the dial is made from Hardlex mineral.
Why: This is a chronograph that’s both stylish and affordable. The movement of the watch is made from Japanese quartz which is what Seiko is best known for. Furthermore the SNN421 has two chronograph sub-dials: one that displays seconds and another one that goes up to 60 minutes.
Just like the Tissot Automatic watch that we discussed earlier this one is a bit more ”dressy” than the other watches on the list. It’s not exactly a dress watch but it will fit well with a business casual outfit. Also, the brown leather and dial make it a rarity on this list.
11. Wenger Sea Force 3H (0641.102)
Price: $160 – $250
Materials: The Sea Force 3H is available in a lot of different materials. One thing that the different versions have in common is that their case is made out of stainless steel. Furthermore, mineral is what covers the dial.
What you can choose is the color of the bezel and dial (aqua blue or black) and the strap (stainless steel, leather or rubber). The variety in styles makes this watch the most versatile one on this list.
Why: There are only a handful of Swiss watch brands that actually make their own movements. Wenger is certainly one of those. The Swiss made watches that this company sells are known for their high-quality and affordability. I mean, this still is a Swiss made watch for less than $300.
Furthermore, this watch comes in a lot of different styles so you can have one that exactly fits your preferences. To top it all off, the watch is water resistant up to 200 meters (660 feet) and uses a Swiss quartz movement.
12. Hamilton Khaki King (H64455533)
Price: $475 – $525
Materials: The 40mm stainless steel case of this Hamilton timepiece is attached to a thick, genuine leather strap. Because this watch has a higher price range it also uses anti-reflective sapphire instead of mineral to cover it’s dial. Sapphire is a lot stronger and more scratch resistant.
Why: This particular watch uses an automatic, self-winding movement that is made by ETA. Those are good movements but they don’t have the charm of being produced in-house. Furthermore the watch has a day-date display at the 12 o’clock mark.
Furthermore the hands of the watch and the hour markers are luminous and actually quite large. These provide great visibility at night. Also, it has 24-hour time on the inner dial.
